In Memory Of

Alma de Syringa
May 1998 - June 13, 2008

On June 13, 2008 a new star took its place in the sky
to mark the loss of a special Paso Fino mare.

Before she left to run free in heavenly pastures,
Alma gave us a chestnut filly.
A part of herself.
A gift of comfort and a promise for the future.

Alma, a beautiful mare saddled up and ready for a ride.

Alma and her new filly - June 12, 2008

On the afternoon of June 12, 2008 Alma delivered her first foal - a beautiful strong chestnut filly with four long socks and a blaze face with a unique spot inside the white on her forehead.  But the joy and excitement of the filly's arrival was all too short.  During the night Alma developed very severe colic.  Even though she received the best in diagnosis and treatment from the wonderful Veterinarians and Vet Students at Washington State University, the odds were overwhelmingly against her.

Alma with her dam Candelita - May 1998

Alma de Syringa was a 3rd generation foal from foundation bloodlines my parents brought into Idaho in the 1960s.  Her dam Candelita was one of the outstanding Pure Puerto Rican daughters of Carlitos and Velera.

Alma's Filly nicknamed "Daisy" - July 17, 2008

Starting to shed and turning a rich Liver Chestnut.
This independent girl has personality plus!

Daisy's markings have several characteristics of a "minimal white sabino pinto" (not easy to see in photo).  1) Her chin is almost totally white (large chin spot).  2) The brown spot within the white on her face.  3) Long sock on her left hind leg has very uneven "lacey" edges.  4) Chestnut spots within her socks on both hind legs.

Alma de Syringa - lovingly remembered by Larry and Maridel Merritt, Syringa Paso Finos, Bonners Ferry, Idaho
